The most exciting thing about our stopover in Eureka was finally being in our new home state of California. That and the salad bar (more on that shortly). There was also plenty of excitement of another variety around our crack hotel that Casey inadvertently booked through a misleading website. This inspired me to take over the hotel bookings for a while leading to fantastic results down the road.
But it was a beautiful drive complete with our first glimpse of redwoods (Casey really really likes redwoods exclaiming “look at them big daddies!” repeatedly) and our first glimpse of the California ocean which we pulled over to admire. Kinda cool moment. Little did we know, we’d be getting up close and personal with that ocean in the coming months.
We walked downtown through what felt like a ghosttown. Really eerie. And covered in fog that added to the eerie-ness. They have giant jail taking up much of the downtown. Probably not going to live in Eureka. We did have a fantastic meal at a seafood restaurant that also boasted an amazing salad bar. Didn’t know you could be a fancy restaurant and still have a salad bar. Boy, were we wrong.
Strolled around and admired the interesting (but maybe sometimes faux??) Victorians. Were also mystified by a statue of Bigfoot (or maybe it really was Bigfeets?) in the distance of the downtown shot above. Hard to tell in the fog. Check that picture out and let us know what you think. These local bandits tried to follow us home. It appears as if they have stripey possums running wild in this town. Time to head on South.
